My interest in amateur radio began midway through my military career as a flight engineer. Mostly over the Pacific and European theaters, I would take over the aircraft radios and listen in on the HF radio contacts. I would even use my own hand held scanner to get status reports on the inbound aircraft we were assigned to, which was fun because it always confused the crew as I knew before the aircraft commander whether we were flying or not.

My favorite air band is without question, the UHF. This band was always the most reliable when we needed communications in severe weather. Believe me, flying in the soup is no fun without radio communications.

Now for my shack equipment I have an ADI AT-600 dual-band portable transceiver, Yaesu VX-1 dual-band portable transceiver, ICOM IC-2100H 2 meter transceiver, Alinco DR-140PKT 2 Meter Transceiver, AEA(Timewave) PK-12 packet modem, Yaesu FT-7200 70 CM transceiver, ICOM R1 portable receiver, and a Uniden BC895-XLT receiver.

For shortwave listening I use a Yaesu FRG-100 high-performance communications receiver, Sony ICF-SW7600GR general coverage receiver, a portable Ten-Tec 1054 regenerative 4-Band SWL receiver, and a recently built Ten-Tec 1253 regenerative 9-Band SWL receiver.

Soon I hope to offer streaming media for those high speed users. The platform politics however have yet to offer a good solution.
